Send And Receive

Devotional for Saturday, January 27, 2001 by Anne Russell

1 John 4:14-16 - And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. (NIV)

Before we left our home in the north to reside in the south for a few months, we investigated a server for our e-mail. We sought one that could be used in the north as well as in the south, without changing our address. We understood that the server we chose would do the job.

Having arrived in the south, we tried to access our server using our local area code, and found that the nearest listing would cost us a twenty-five cent charge each time I wanted to send e-mail.

We found a free Internet service that I can use to send our messages, but I found it far too complicated and slow. I didn't wish to discontinue our server, as I have someone at home, using one of our mailboxes. I am also hoping that, for future use, the Internet service provider will get a number in the local area. (Wishful thinking!)

In simple language, I could receive all my e-mail for free, but there is a charge to send.

All is now resolved, and we don't need help with it.

Yet all this led me to think about God, and how He sent His Son, Jesus Christ into the world that we might receive Him, free of charge. Yet what a cost it was for God to do the sending -- to send His Son to live among us, to suffer and die that we might receive life eternal.

How many of us have received this gift? We can have it for free and it won't cost us anything. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

2 Peter 1:10-11 - Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to us, that we might receive Him and inherit Your eternal kingdom. We come to the throne of your grace in prayer, thanking you for this gift you gave so freely. Amen.
